"The word 'doula' is a Greek word meaning 'woman servant or caregiver'. More recently, it refers to someone who offers emotional, physical and informational support to a woman and her partner before, during and after childbirth." A doula (also known as a birth attendant) believes in 'mothering the mother' and is there as part of a team to help the mother achieve the birth she would ideally like to have. A doula will listen to any fears, hopes and expectations the mother may have, she is a constant support throughout and will respect the mother's decisions at all times.
